If you are concerned about an elderly person, it can be difficult to know what to do first. You may be worried about a parent, neighbor, friend, or relative who seems confused, isolated, unsafe at home, or unable to manage daily needs. You may also notice possible signs of neglect, abuse, financial exploitation, or self-neglect.
If the person is in immediate danger, call 911 right away.
If it is not an emergency, try to speak with the older adult if it is safe and appropriate. Ask how they are doing, whether they need help, and if there is a trusted family member, caregiver, doctor, or social worker who should be contacted.
When you are concerned about an elderly person, helpful contacts may include:
• A trusted family member or caregiver
• The person’s doctor or healthcare provider
• A hospital social worker or discharge planner
• A local senior center• An Area Agency on Aging
• Adult Protective Services, if abuse, neglect, or exploitation may be involved
In Illinois, concerns about abuse, neglect, exploitation, or self-neglect involving adults age 60 and older can be reported to Adult Protective Services through the statewide 24-hour hotline at 1-866-800-1409.
You do not need to have all the answers before asking for help. If you are concerned about an elderly person, reaching out early can help connect them with meals, transportation, home care, medical support, safety resources, or other services.
A caring phone call can protect someone’s safety, dignity, and independence. It is always better to ask for guidance than to ignore a situation that may become worse.
