An emergency can be stressful, especially when family members or healthcare professionals cannot quickly find important information. Creating a senior emergency information folder can help older adults and caregivers stay organized and prepared.

What Should Be Included?

Start with a current medication list that includes the name, dosage, purpose, and schedule for each medication. Include known allergies, medical conditions, previous surgeries, and the names and phone numbers of doctors, specialists, and the preferred pharmacy.

A complete senior emergency information folder should also contain:

  • Emergency contacts

  • Medicare and insurance information

  • Copies of identification

  • Preferred hospital information

  • List of medical equipment used at home

  • Advance directives

  • Healthcare power of attorney documents

  • Contact information for caregivers or service providers

Keep the folder in a secure but accessible location. Tell a trusted family member or caregiver where it is stored. Avoid placing original legal documents in the folder unless it is kept somewhere secure. Review the information every few months and update it whenever medications, doctors, insurance coverage, or emergency contacts change.

You may also create a smaller emergency card for a wallet or purse. Include the senior’s name, allergies, major medical conditions, emergency contact, and preferred hospital.

Preparation can make it easier for families and professionals to respond quickly during an unexpected situation. Octicare connects seniors and caregivers with trusted resources that support safety, independence, and informed decision-making.
