Medicare can help older adults pay for many important healthcare needs. Understanding Medicare services for seniors can make it easier to know what may be covered, what costs to expect, and when additional insurance may be helpful.

Medicare Services for Seniors and What They May Cover

Medicare Part A mainly helps cover inpatient hospital care, skilled nursing facility care after a qualifying stay, hospice care, and certain home health services.

Medicare Part B covers many outpatient healthcare needs, including doctor visits, diagnostic tests, outpatient treatment, durable medical equipment, and qualifying home health services. It also covers many preventive services, such as screenings, vaccines, and the yearly Medicare Wellness visit.

Prescription drug coverage is generally available through Medicare Part D or a Medicare Advantage plan that includes drug coverage. Each drug plan has its own formulary, costs, and coverage rules.

Some seniors choose Medicare Advantage, also known as Part C. These private Medicare-approved plans must provide Medicare-covered Part A and Part B services and may offer additional benefits, depending on the plan.

When reviewing Medicare services for seniors, it is also important to understand what Original Medicare generally does not cover. Long-term custodial care, most routine dental care, hearing aids, and routine vision services are common examples.

Coverage and out-of-pocket costs can vary, so seniors should review their individual plan before scheduling care.
