Many Medicare beneficiaries are surprised to learn that prescription coverage can depend not only on the medication itself, but also on why it is prescribed. Understanding is sildenafil covered by Medicare Part D can help you know what questions to ask your doctor, pharmacist, and prescription drug plan before filling a prescription.
Sildenafil is best known as the generic form of Viagra, which is used to treat erectile dysfunction. Under Medicare rules, drugs used specifically for sexual or erectile dysfunction are generally excluded from standard Part D coverage. However, sildenafil is also approved for certain other medical conditions, including pulmonary arterial hypertension.
Is Sildenafil Covered by Medicare Part D for Every Medical Use?
The answer depends on the diagnosis and your individual plan. Medicare Part D generally does not cover sildenafil when it is prescribed solely to treat erectile dysfunction. Federal Medicare rules specifically exclude medications when they are used for sexual or erectile dysfunction.
Sildenafil may, however, qualify as a Part D drug when it is prescribed for an FDA-approved condition other than erectile dysfunction, such as pulmonary arterial hypertension. Even then, coverage is not automatic. Your specific Medicare drug plan must include the medication on its formulary, and the plan may apply requirements such as prior authorization, quantity limits, or other coverage rules.
Some enhanced Medicare drug plans may choose to offer additional coverage for medications that Original Medicare rules otherwise exclude, so it is important to check your individual plan rather than assuming sildenafil will or will not be covered.
If your doctor prescribes sildenafil, ask which condition the prescription is treating and contact your Medicare Part D plan before filling it. The plan can confirm whether the medication is covered, what restrictions apply, and what your expected copayment may be.
