Turning 65 can open the door to helpful benefits, healthcare services, and local programs—but not everything marketed as a “senior benefit” is automatically free. If you are wondering what free things can you get when you are 65, the answer depends on your Medicare coverage, income, location, and eligibility for individual programs.

What Free Things Can You Get When You Are 65 in Illinois?

For many adults, age 65 means becoming eligible for Medicare. Medicare Part B covers a one-time “Welcome to Medicare” preventive visit during your first 12 months with Part B at no cost when the provider accepts assignment. Medicare also covers a yearly Wellness visit and many qualifying preventive screenings and vaccines, although additional services performed during a visit can sometimes result in charges.

Illinois seniors may have additional opportunities. The Benefit Access Program offers qualifying adults age 65 and older free rides on participating fixed-route public transit systems. Eligibility is based on factors including Illinois residency and income, so turning 65 alone does not guarantee the benefit.

The Illinois Department on Aging also connects seniors with programs for home and community-based assistance, caregiver support, insurance counseling, and other resources that may be free for eligible participants.

There are recreational savings too. Adults 62 and older can purchase discounted Senior Passes for participating federal recreation sites, although these passes are not free.

Because benefits vary, it is worth checking Medicare, Illinois senior programs, and local community resources rather than assuming you do—or do not—qualify.
